By S. Hammett
Before the review, I would like to inform you reading this that the game is much cheaper and still available brand new from Game Stop dot com. Do not be fooled by sellers trying to make an extra buck. Now for the review! The entire Xenoblade experience is a breath of fresh of air. Not since the Playstation 2 has there been a more captivating JRPG. Strange that it wound up on the Wii of all systems, but it's probably the only reason why I haven't sold mine yet.Gameplay: 75 hours in and just completed story mode. This doesn't include optional weapons, bosses, quests, exploration. It's not turned based like old school RPGs, it plays out in real time with an action bar and commands on cool down - very similar to World of Warcraft, actually. You level up, get skill points, allocate skill points, and dominate foes. This game is not for the weak hearted, though. Crazy amounts of grinding levels, accompanied with a huge amount of side quests that tie into a developing social-structure in game will give you hours upon hours of stuff to do -- and can become a little tedious toward end game.Graphics: Some of the best on the Wii. I haven't been blown away by colors or environments in an RPG since Final Fantasy X on the PS2, and Xenoblade might even do it better.Sound: Memorable and easy to listen to music. Doesn't get too tedious, but a little old after 70 hours. Voice acting is decent, but Nintendo could've put some more work into it.Control: Easy, breezy, beautiful. Use a classic controller.Story: Very engaging, always leaving you wanting more. Not going into any details whatsoever, but plot twist after plot twist mixed with awesomely unique characters makes your personal life seem inadequate.Enjoy this game and take your time. Stay away from guides your first play through to avoid spoilers as you'll be able to New Game + upon completion. And remember, it's available MUCH cheaper (and brand new) at Game Stop at the time this review was written.

Rare these days.Music well doneCharacter design and monster design both well thought outStory uniqueStreamlined rpg: quick travel to landmarks, die and not lose exp or items gained, save almost anytime (dunno why more console rpgs don't do this)Build relationships w party members and npcs gain rewards and enhance story mostly optionalCharacters change appearance w equipment in all cutscenes as wellChallenging but not frustratingSkills learned keep you wanting to level upFor the wii...good graphicsMagical and I have not felt that real rpg magic since the snes psx classics, if you miss it here it is! First rpg since chrono trigger I'm doing new game+Cons:Some loooong cut scenesOnly 3 characters at once and 1 real healer limits variety don't get to use and play with all as much as you'd likeDo reach skill plateau but better than most togsTowns cities could have been more impressive especially on 2nd worldOn the wii, sequal for wiiU (fingers crossed)Buy it as soon as you're able and I give a 9.5 out of 10 odds u shan't be dissapointed. As one of the people who signed that petition and pre-ordered it, I'm so glad this game came out!Xenoblade is an amazing game. It's not perfect by any stretch but it does so many things right. The environments are amazing. The areas you explore are huge and rendered in great detail. Whole sections stretch for miles all around with barely any noticeable loading or graphical pop-ins as you move around. The grass, the bushes and the trees all sway in the breeze. Animals move around, doing their daily routine, making the world seem more alive. Panning the camera around gives you some spectacular shots of distant mountains and cliffs.Unlike games like Fable or Kingdoms of Amular-which I've never played but have heard about-your character IS NOT limited to corridors or incapable of jumping around to other areas! Huzzah! In this respect, it feels more like Skyrim in its freedom of movement. FF XII had great environments but boring corridors gameplay. This doesn't, and it feels great! The gameplay is intense and exciting. Similar to FF XII, you take control of one character while the other character auto-attack. However, unlike XII, the game cannot be pre-programmed to play itself. You have to think constantly about what you can do to help yourself and your team-mates. Your character, Shulk, will gain several abilities along the way which allow him to help out his friends in various ways. Teamwork is of utmost importance in this game. Knowing when to use a certain move and in what position, whether to the side or behind an enemy, is key to survival; playing in this way, easily selecting your next move while positioning your character makes sure the game seldom becomes mind-numbing or repetitive. You can even issue commands to your allies, such as "Focus your attacks!" or "Come to me!" As environments may help or hinder your fighting, being able to rally your friends beside is very important. The music is spectacular. It is composed by veteran Yasunori Mitsuda, the man who once threatened to walk out on Squaresoft if not given an important project and latter went on to compose the legendary score for Chrono Trigger. As always, his music is brilliant and instantly recognizable as his own signature brand. Additionally, the music was composed by five other composers. Obviously, they went all out with the music and it shows. I find myself thinking of these catchy, yet symphonic beats all the time. Most tracks are at least four or five minutes long and far from simplistic. Also, the tone of the music changes from day to night so you will hear different variations of the same song or sometimes a different song all together.Unlike the over-rated FF XIII, this game's music isn't boring or forgettable. It easily finds its way into your subconscious right along with all the other great tracks you grew up with.Overall, gameplay combines several different elements. It plays like an upgraded version of FF XII but gives freedom of movement like in Skyrim. However, unlike Skyrim, you still move from one area to the next in a linear fashion as the story plays out so it feels more like a traditional J-RPG but with modern Western RPG elements thrown in for spice. The story is fascinating and fairly compelling, with a lead character who is thankfully not in the emo mindset we might have come to expect. Shulk is a guy you can respect and enjoy controlling. So with all the great things about this game, why do I give it only four stars? Several reasons which I will now discuss. The graphics in this game are sadly dated. Yes, yes, I know before I said the game looks amazing and it does, but when I say that I only mean in terms of imagination and design. Up close, everything looks like PS2 era graphics. This game would have look amazing by 2004 standards but it is 2012 and the graphics are noticeably behind the times. This may not bother you so much, it really doesn't bother me that much, but it bears mentioning, especially when we're on the threshold of eighth gen. gaming and this looks like it's still back in the sixth gen.The voice acting is terrible. As soon as you play you'll notice they're obviously using the same voice actors for the PAL release of this game. British voices don't bother me so much, and actually think it's refreshing to hear European accents. However, I can't listen to these people speak without seeing them reading from a script in the recording room. They don't sound the least bit convincing except for one or two instances, and it seriously detracts from the story line. Speaking of story, part of the reason the voice acting is terrible may have something to do with poor dialogue. Had this game been in greater demand they may have spent more time in translation and voice work. In the end, this is all we have to work with and really makes it hard to connect with the characters.I saw en entire village get ravaged by flesh eating robots. Not since Spielberg's War of the Worlds had I seen something so chilling. I saw the hero's friend get killed by these machines. I completely forgot myself and felt what the character was feeling. I heard him give a blood curdling scream and say "I'll kill you!!!" and felt perfectly in that moment. Then the moment was gone...In the following minutes I was subjected to some of the worst, most clichéd dialogue and voice acting ever. What a buzz kill. I suddenly didn't care that much about the hero's quest for revenge. This is what you have to look forward to if you want to be invested in the story.Getting back to the gameplay, the menu system is also a little klunky, particularly when buying and selling items. It's way easy to score item in this game and while it certainly helps in better equipping your characters and making money, selling items not needed quickly become a chore and this is a chore you'll have to repeat many times. There's a neat town building segment latter in the game but building up the town is a bit of a pain in that you have to front the materials yourself. When I decided to invest some time into this I found some of the necessary item were ones that I once had but recently sold >.
